Our products
Vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI) products have been used by more than 5,000 companies and 200,000 people worldwide. VCI chemical formulations are odorless, invisible, nontoxic, non-flammable, non-reactive, and non-allergenic. They do not cause eye, skin or respiratory irritation. VCI products are also approved by all major automotive companies’ toxicology departments, and various health & safety institutes throughout the world.
VCI products have been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in protecting metal food containers and processing equipment and have been approved by the relevant Australian and NZ authorities.
Yes all our products are manufactured under a quality control system that complies with ISO 9000.
VCI Plastics protect Ferrous metals: Iron, steel and cast iron metals are protected using the yellow/orange ferrous packaging.
VCI vapor capsules will protect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals from corrosion including copper, brass and silver.
A light oil coating on the metal part is fine to use with X-Rust VCI bags. A heavy oil coating may affect the performance of the X-Rust VCI bag by keeping the corrosion inhibiting vapor molecules from reaching the metal surface. Please contact X-Rust to determine the suitability of the oil and application.
If the rip is small, you can cover the rip or hole with a high quality piece of tape that is designed to adhere to low energy surfaces like polyethylene. We recommend 3M duct tape 8979. Or, you can fold over and staple the area shut and then seal over the holes made by the staples with the recommended tape. If you have a large rip that you cannot close easily with tape or staples, you should replace the bag with a new one.
Yes, if the bags are still in good condition without holes or tears. Bags that have an excessive number of holes or tears, have large holes or tears, or have begun to crack or lose strength due to excessive exposure to direct sunlight will not provide adequate corrosion protection and should not be reused.
Note that VCI bags will only provide protection for up to 5 years so record the date of first use on the bag.
X-Rust plastic products, including car and motorbike bags have an in-service life of up to five years when protecting clean metal surfaces and when used as recommended. Vapor capsules protect for one year and plastabs protect for two years.
X-Rust products have a shelf life if up to two years when the product is stored in its original packaging, out of direct sunlight and under shelter.
The shelf life is the duration of time that unused X-Rust products can be stored prior to use without losing their effectiveness. Typically this is two years if stored correctly.
The in-service life is the duration of time that the VCI products will protect clean metal objects from corrosion if used properly. This is as follows:
5 years: VCI plastics (firearm tube, firearm and fishing bags, tube strip, car and motorbike bags)
2 years: Plastabs
1 year: Vapor capsules
3-6 months: High performance desiccant (depends on weather etc)
VCI’s can be used in any environment with no measurable chemical interaction with other elements. There is no likelihood that the corrosion inhibitor will enhance flammability or react with industrial or marine atmospheres to create any by-products.
